where is the computer in the 92firebird
hi I have a beauiful cherry red 92 firebird with 168000 miles on it. I have had it for about 5 years now, I have always taking good care of it, doing all the repair work on it myself. lately it has been stallling almost every time I come to a stop. I put it in park, since it won't start in neutral, and it starts right up, but it feels like it wants to die out, but then it runs fine till I come to a stop, I notice the rpms start to decline and I give it gas then it's fine. I have replaced the 02 sensor, the plugs, and wires, distributor cap, rotor, pvc valve, fuel filter & it still dies out when I come to a stop or slow down. When it's idleing, it feels like it's surging, rpm's going up & down. I'm thinking it's the electronic control module, but I can't figure out where it's located on the car.
Does anyone out there know so that I can take it out & put in a new one? Thanks for your help. MorethanRich Last edited by morethanrich; 05-24-2008 at 09:54 PM. Reason: wrong year |

Re: where is the computer in the 92firebird
I thought those were still on the passenger side, tucked up under the dash.
What engine? |

Re: where is the computer in the 92firebird
what you are describing sounds like the iac (idle air control valve), or the tps (throttle position sensor)

Re: where is the computer in the 92firebird
Your IAC has probably become gummed up and is getting "lazy".

Re: where is the computer in the 92firebird
I had that happen in my 305 TBI 92 Firebird and it turned out to be a 50 cent part. It was a little rubber hose inside the fuel tank that goes between the fuel pump and the metal gas line. You gotta remove the gas tank ( removing some of the rear end to do ) so you might as well replace the fuel pump while you do it. But first make sure it's not the IAC ( idle air control).

I agree with 91 bird, sounds to me just like the TPS. I believe though just incase you are curious where the computer is, not sure however I've had so many cars, I had an 89 firebird and believe it was right in the middle section underneath everything, radio and all of that stuff on the floorboard, not sure of that though.

Re: where is the computer in the 92firebird
As far as I know the computer is always on the passenger side , right above the kick panel. That's at your feet, right in front of the door. The plastic panel there, it should be right above that . Either 2 or 4 bolts holding it on . But me and my friends have been playing with these cars for years , and that is not a part I'd be replacing for those syptoms. Check your fuel pressure, if it's low , then it's either fuel pump or the little bitty rubber hose I said. Could be the TPS or IAC , but I had replaced both of those on my car , before discovering it was the 50 cent rubber hose in the tank. Also we need to know your engine and your fuel system. Are you V-6 , 305, or 350? If V-8 are you throttle body or Tuned Port ?
