Upgrades for my Geo Storm

So I got this Geo Storm 5-speed manual 1.6L, 4 cyl, it's got an exhaust leak now, I'm looking to start by replacing the WHOLE exhaust system and Air Flow Intake. Could anyone tell me some good performance systems that aren't as powerful as Greddy, but not cheap either, I heard Flowmaster's are nice. Links would be wonderful, also, what kind of Cold Air Intakes?

Re: Upgrades for my Geo Storm

Pacesetter makes a fairly decent exhaust (i like it, i have it on both of my storms)

The images for the pacesetter exhaust are not the true pictures on this site, but if you search through Ebay Motors for Geo Stom Parts & Accessories, you can get Pacesetter headers for $181.97 u.s., and the rest of the exhaust for $272.97u.s.

i only provided the link for the andysautsport, i was to lazy to re-search out the ebay item pages. Also, the same exhaust is more on andysautosport.com

Re: Upgrades for my Geo Storm

my buddy was telling me I should put in a 91 or a 92 (i forgot which) Isuzu Stylus 1.8 Turbo engine instead of the stock Storm 1.6, he also recommended either that or the I guess he said Saturn L300? engine of around that year. 1990-1993, He said just simply doing that would give me a better chance of competing against his Mazda Mx6... Also, would a Toyota 3000 2.0 4cyl Automatic Transmission be compatible somehow with my car?

I just got done putting a Short Ram intake on, but unfortunately it's not doing me much good , the pipe is short, and it's just sucking in hot air from under the hood.... I'm wondering how big of a pipe I can put on without making it too long where the air can't reach the engine.

Re: Upgrades for my Geo Storm

I would stay away from saturn engines, i've owned 3 saturns and blew out every single motor before 65,000 miles. Instead of the Stylus, if you can find an Impulse RS, they are exactly the same chassis but if you find one in good condition, grab the stock-turbo motor out of that, and you can also grab the drivetrain (the impulses are AWD) i would have to check on the transmission, i dont know about automatics (mine are stick)

As for short ram intake, i would advise switching it to a cold air intake, you can qucikly fab it into the wheel well, it'll only be about 6 inches longer, and it has worked great for my storms. I'll post my cardomain site later, it only has one photo of one of my storms (no longer have a camera) but it also has some drawings i did of body kits.

edit for spelling

Re: Upgrades for my Geo Storm

If you would, help me find a cold air intake, I don't think I have the wiring to hook it up or at least that's what my friend said, and when you say fab in to the wheel well, you mean cut out a section for the pipe to go through correct? My friend and I were looking through ebay and all he could find was short ram... Also as far as the drivetrain, I was told AWD sucks for street racing. But at least my stuff can't get towed by a wheel lift lol! jk jk... What year impulse engine should I look for?

Edit to make mention about automatics: My storm is a 5-speed as well, I was just making mention that the Toyota engine came from a vehicle with automatic transmission.

Define "fairly decent".
  • Poor packaging resulted in the ends of the pipe being somewhat less than round.
  • The slip joint between the front and middle section had not been expanded enough to allow the end of the front section to slide onto the middle section. The pipe had to be expanded before the system could be assembled on the car.
  • The pipe had been bent incorrectly such that the exhaust system was pressed against the botom of the car in three places: the heat shield on the fuel tank, the front edge of the lower trailing arm, and the side of the rear cross member. The connections will not allow any adjustment, and short of bending the pipe, there is no way to solve this, short of having the system bent by someone with pipe bending equipment, such as a muffler shop.

The exhaust sound is atrocious, and there is an intense fart sound from 2,000 RPM to 4,000 RPM.
The sound is about as melodious as someone shaking a metal can full of nuts and bolts.
The sound inside the car is as if the car has a bad wheel bearing, engine vibration at all speeds, even when coasting.
This exhaust system is quite a bit louder than was expected for a chamber style muffler with small, 2 1/4 inch diameter pipe. The rattling and annoying resonant frequencies of the system which cause the buzzy, sticatto, weed whacker sound seem to actually amplify the most shrill and harsh sounds within the sound of the engine exhaust.
The black paint begins burning off of the side of the car almost immediately once the engine is started after installing the exhaust system. The stench of the burning paint is pretty strong and very persistent. There was smoke visible, wafting from beneath the car the entire time the system was on our test car.

Poorly made, poorly fitting, loud and obnoxious sounding, quick to rust out, and poorly performing.

Hardly "fairly decent" by any stretch.

Re: Upgrades for my Geo Storm

sorry for the grammar and spelling

that's bull about awd sucks for street racing. you just haft to tune them right. friends got awd outback and he stomped a 06 vet and a rx8 by a car. and all he has did was flashed the comp it in.

i dont know how well you are at fabbing, but a friend and i just put a awd 3000gt motor and tans with a skyline grt rear end down in a storm. it was tit like we had to cut 3in out of the wheel wells to get it to fit. now there is a 1/2in for the wheel well when the wheel is trun all the way. have not got to play with it yet.

i go by this big motor small car = littel better gass, and more speed. if im right the str motor and trans will fix but the wireing is diff. as for awd its all about the gearing in the rear end to.
