97 Gr Am - coolant leak, no overheating

97 Grand Am Quad 4, began solo trip last night to meet family for Memorial weekend when 'low coolant light' came on. Phoned hubby who advised how to add coolant, & to turn-on heater to assist flow-through, but light remained lit. Temperature gauge did NOT increase above normal though.

Rather than drive another 200 miles, I opted to return home where I noticed coolant dripping under the engine. A steady drip but not an actual flow. I know I over-filled coolant reservoir but I think this is leaking far more than that should have caused, and also, the low coolant light still stays on. I am not 'automotive literate' so the following description is the best I can do:
under the engine area there appears to be a large, almost flat panel, and the leak appears to be immediately in front of this panel, pretty much in the center of the width of the car. I have looked from the top and from the bottom (as best as can since car's not up on ramp) and see no 'hose' with coolant leaking from it. When I turn off the car, it will drip for a few minutes and then stop.

Of course this happens on a 3 day weekend when I have no means to have car repaired. Can I drive short distance to grocery, or will I further damage car if I drive it? And what's your best thought on what the problem is? I'm not a a dumb woman, but I am very clueless when it comes to cars, and since husband isn't here to inspect the problem, I have turned to the experts here. Thanks for any advice you may have...

Re: 97 Gr Am - coolant leak, no overheating

Well the coolant has to be coming from some place. Have you looked the the top of the engine as well for any leaks? It may be coming from a hose, it could be the water pump leaking, the thermostat leaking. I would check your oil to make sure that you don't have a blown gasket first on your hands. Make sure your oil is NOT a milky color. If your oil is fine, then you have to find the location of the leak. You maybe able to do some local trips but i can not vouch that the leak will not get worse and cause an over heat. I would take any trips in the car very easy for now and carry extra coolant and water if you do have to go out anyplace. Good luck.
