2000 E350 Van Service engine light

Service engine light is on most of the time and the overdrive light on the shifter flashes for a minute after you start the van. Anybody have a clue what that means before I take it in for the diagnostic? I haven't got a chance to yet. I'm too busy.

My book says serious transmission fault, do not drive other than to a repair shop.
