2000 Silverado Rear Questions

I have been having a problem with some slight slipping coming from the rear. I have milked for as long as I could but it is getting worse now. I have a friend with a wrecked 05 1500 4x4 . I was wonder if that rear would fit in a 2000 z71 5.3 4x4. It has 4.10 and would have to change to match my 3.73 . I am not talking out a complete swap just change out the differental. If it would fit would it be worth while rebuilding or just buy a new one ? If rebuild is suggested where would be the best plce to suplly the parts I would need?

Re: 2000 Silverado Rear Questions

I have changed the the gear oil twice this year but didn't add any additives. I used what was recommended. What anti-slip additive is recommended? I am going to do it again today with my oil change. Would like to know so I can do it all at once.

Re: 2000 Silverado Rear Questions

If you use valvoline synthetic, or equivalant you do not need additive. I would use 75/90 weight if you use your truck lightly as it will net you some MPG, but if you tow often and or are loaded pretty good then I would use 75/140 or 90/140 (I forget which one, its the next weight up from 75/90).

There is a product at all parts stores it is called Slip additive made by Lucas (I think). If you ask the parts guy he can tell you exactly. But again, if you use the synthetic stuff it says you do not need qany additive as it is already in there (read bottlle and make sure).

If you do not has LS differential, then no worries. And it may be your tranny that is slipping.

mod _12 you must use the proper diff fluid in your vehicle....it should be labeled at the diff fill hole if not go to dealer with your vin to ensure the proper fluid type......i have LOCKING diff this uses the 75-90wt synthetic oil...i replace every 40,000mi when i replace my transfer case oil tracII fluid...2000 sil 120,000mi 4X4 no problems....

LIMITED SLIP diff uses 80-90wt oil with 5oz of limited slip additive ..this diff is in my opinion not a good diff for a truck....my other vehicle has this on an impala ss and the limited slip offers what it says a limited amount of traction.....the locking is the superior diff for plowing/towing off roading.....

when you do this fluid change on diff always remove cover and clean the insides and the magnet on cover.....if magnet is missing you must get a new one....

Re: 2000 Silverado Rear Questions

How do I know what rear I have? I have been using the synthetic. Says synthetic on the tag at the fill hole. But know where in it does it say to use an additive. I never had a dealer ask for the vin he just hands me the bottle. I do alot of towing with it 20ft enclosed every Friday and Sat about 300 miles a weekend.

Re: 2000 Silverado Rear Questions

I have the factory service manuals for 2000. 75w-90 synthetic is the required fluid. Even if you have a locking diff, it does not require an additive.

The 94 - 96 Impala SS had an Auburn diff which requires an additive. The Eaton Locker does not need an additive.

because you have this tag on diff saying 75-90wt synthetic you have locking diff that is good....because your towing 4,000lb boat plus equiptment you should replace this fluid as you have been...but drop cover to clean out the diff and magnet....do not use any additive in this locking diff !

Re: 2000 Silverado Rear Questions

The G80 is an open diff, with 3.73 gear ratio

Re: 2000 Silverado Rear Questions

The G80 is only the carrier. All 98 and on Z71's come with the GM 10Bolt (with either the 3.73 or the special order 4.10's, unless you have the SS, which came standard with 4.10s) and the G80 is a Eaton built mechanical locker. Which in my opinion is the weak link of the 10bolt. NOT STRONG at all. I have heard of g80's blowing up rear ends and trannys from very reputable sources, mostly on lifted trucks with 35's but have heard of it doing it on stock trucks as well. If you do a ton of off roading the locker is the way to go. Detroit Tru-Trac, but if you dont limited slips are just fine. I love my Auburn LSD. I think it works better than the G80 I had.

g80 is the locking differential...this differential requires fluid changes.. owners that refuse to properly replace/clean diif/oil will suffer total diff destruction....i know of 2 owners that this has occured within the warrantee period...this diff is far surerior to the limited slip in performance and load abilities...for a TRUCK....especially off roading and pulling a boat up the boat ramp at low tide...
