98 Taurus wagon

hi everyone, I just got a 98 Taurus wagon and I got some question about this car.

1. I find out both of the backup lights isn't working at all, I did replace the light bulbs and the fuse but it still not working at all, what can I do?

2. One of the highmount brake light is out and I want to replace it, but I have no idea how to unbolt the light it self, any ideas?

3. Where is the fuel filter located in this car?

Any input would be really hepful and thank you

Re: 98 Taurus wagon

Did you check for voltage and ground at the back-up lites? If there is no voltage, when there should be, there could be a problem with the T/R switch. I believe it is usually located on top of the transaxle.

Whenever you check a fuse, you also have to check to see if one of the fuse terminals are hot, when it should be. As far as the fuse for the back-up lites, I believe that circuit goes hot, when you turn the key on.

For the high mount brake lite, I believe you have to remove the upper finish panel on the lift gate, don't ask how to remove it, I can't see it from here, then there should be some rubber plugs to remove, that should give you access to the nuts/bolts for the high mount brake lite assembly.

The fuel filter should be under the vehicle passenger side, I'd start looking close to the gas tank and work forward till you find it.

Autozone has some information on this vehicle, just go to the site, click on (vehicle repair guides) then follow the links.

Re: 98 Taurus wagon

I second the thought of the TR switch if you verify you have good ground to the backup lights and still no voltage.

As for the rear high mount stop lamp, the following is from the factory service manual:
Wagon
Removal

1. Open liftgate (40010). Remove liftgate upper finish trim panel.
2. Remove rubber plug from liftgate.
3. Remove four nuts from rear hi-mount lamp mounting studs.
4. Close liftgate and pull rear hi-mount lamp away from liftgate.
5. Turn body main wiring 1/2 turn counterclockwise and remove from rear hi-mount lamp.
6. Gently pull miniature bulb out of body main wiring.

Installation

1. Follow removal procedure in reverse order.
2. Tighten nuts to 1-2 Nm (9-17 lb-in).

The fuel filter is located on the right rear frame rail near the fuel tank.
