Steering rattle

I have a rattle in the steering of my 2004 Grand Prix vin 2. Well I had the ISS replaced due to knocking and then I continued to have a rattle in the steering wheel and floor board. I took the ISS off and lubed it up, the problem is still there. I narrowed it down to the white round plastic ring that is just above where the ISS attaches under the dash.

Does anyone know what that part is and how I can go about fixing or replacing it? I tried to put a little bearing grease on it to quiet it down, it helped a little but still very noticeable. I did not want to attempt to remove it because I do not know what all was involved in it. Thanks for any help!!!!!!

Working on a steering column can be very complex. Do you have any GM FSM documentation showing the parts breakdown? I believe the part you are referring is called the lower shaft adapter and bearing assembly.

No unfortunately I do not have the parts breakdown. Is there anywhere specific I can find the part breakdowns for my vehicle? I do not have experience with the column, the most I have done with that is the ISS...... I do not know exactly what to avoid with the airbag situation. I can do it as long as it does not require any job specific specialty tools.

On a job like that the FSM (factory service manual) would come in handy. It shows the complete steering column in an exploded view. Personally I would not attempt it unless I had one to reference. In most cases for intricate internal repair the steering column should be removed from the vehicle. I have an illustration in PDF file format but for the '97-'03 models only. Probably basically the same so you are welcome to use it as a reference. Removing the airbag module is really not that big of an issue. However, the clock spring is what you need to watch out for and be careful with and any steering position sensor used for the Magnasteer, if equipped.

I agree that it is more than likely the same, I would definately like to see the PDF file if possible. I do not believe I have Magnasteer, but I will have to check. I really need to find a compitent repair manual for the 04 and above. Do you know if any of the cd-rom ones are available for the 04 and above? Thanks for the help!
