Power window issue

I have a '96 ford taurus sedan and my front passenger window will not go up. All the other windows work fine. Any ideas?

Will need a little more info. When you try the window, do you here any type of noise as if the window is trying to go up?

On '95 and earlier models, the rocker switches are infamous for not working with age, often intermittently. On my two Tuarii, the master switch for a particular window is fussy but the switch at the window usually works it. Usually cleaning the contacts from dirt or oxidation with brake cleaner or like and possibly light sanding will get it running again, if it is not broken. I'd also recommend that you put some dielectric silicone on the switch contacts to prevent it from not working again. To access it per Ford SM:

Removal and Installation

1. Remove two screws retaining the window regulator switch plate (14524) to armrest.

2. Rotate the inboard side of window regulator switch plate up and remove from armrest.

3. Remove screws (4 on the driver's side, 3 on the passenger's side) retaining wiring harness connector to window regulator switch plate and using a small screwdriver, carefully pry connector away from switch base.

4. Using a small screwdriver, carefully spread switch retaining walls on window regulator switch plate and remove switch.

5. To install, reverse Removal procedure.

If the window didn't make crunching sounds or rattle when rolled down, then checking for voltage coming from the switch and getting to the motor is probably your next step. If you don't want to pull the door panel quite yet, you can pop the boot out for the wiring harness between the body and the door and inspect the wires for broken or oddly "bent" wires.

Have you tried the passenger window from the master switch on the driver's door as well as from the passenger door switch? Also, make sure the window lock lever is not active at the time.

Thanks for the quick response Rod. I did try the master switch from the driver's door but still the passenger side window did not go up.

Hey, I had the same problem on my 96 Taurus. I figured it was a bad window motor. I bought a used working motor and replaced it and the window worked. When I checked the old motor it was still good. So I put it back in and it worked.
The window must have been jammed at the motor sprocket or something. It may be woth a try. The door panel comes off really easy and the window motor is easily accessed once the panel is removed.

It does sound like you need to figure out if power is getting to the motor from your switches. I remember one thing from my car you can try without using your meter and pulling anything apart to see if you are getting power to the motor, is to turn on the interior lights, then with the key on in the accessory position, (must be no engine on to do this) you try working the window switches. On my vehicles, especially in the dark, you can see the lights dim when running the windows on battery power. So, try the windows that work and then compare to the one that isn't working. At least you will now now if it is even getting juice. The motor doesn't grunt or groan? Nothing? Maybe put your ear to the door panel for a better hear. Good luck!

On 95 and earlier models they did not use relays for the windows and I was not able to determine if the new generation has relays or not. Anyone know? I know the Windstars starting in 95 have them. If you did have them, Mokeyman, you would hear a second click in addition to the window switch. In the Windstar, the front passenger door relay is under the dash, I think on the side wall. Your window could be jammed due to various mechanical reasons all of which require opening up the door.

I popped out the boot for the wiring harness and found out I had some bent wires. After "jiggling" the wires around, the window went right up. Thanks for all the great advice. Just in time before the rains start. You guys are the best!

Pull the door panel off and disconnect all the wiring
There are three bolts that hold the motor in. I believe their are either 8mm or 10mm

Unbolt the motor and plug the wiring harness back up to the switch
see if the motor will turn

The voltage switches polarity at the switch.
you can check to see if the motor is good by hooking it hot straight to the battery.
If it turns reverse the wires and see if it turns that way.

I would bet you are going to find that the motor is OK but you have a bad panel switch.
