who's put a 94-96 crossmember in a box chevy?
I'm about to tackle this crossmember swap out. I got a hold of a crossmember from a '96 Impala and plan on putting it in my '87 with the 700r4. I haven't put it up in there yet to see what exactly needs to be modified but will be this week. Anybody done this?

Haven't done it. I know it should take a piece of angle iron welded to one side and some holes drilled in said angle iron to match the existing holes.

I've heard the same. I'm crossing my fingers because I think I remember reading something about the trani mount too...

Thanks Silicon, yah I've got the 700r4 so that's one less thing to worry about. Sounds like I should be tackling this project this weekend I hope.

Use 1" angle iron. 8" long would be fine and make sure you weld it good. I use a wirefeed welder, myself.

Re: who's put a 94-96 crossmember in a box chevy?
Here's the old xmember (above) and the new xmember (below). Tried sticking it up under the car and encountered a couple problems right away.
Notice the difference in the amount of metal forward of the old xmember trani mount hole and the new xmember trani mount hole. I think I'm going to need to drill a new trani mount hole in the new xmember because it hits the pan if it were able to go any farther forward under the car. And Silicon, it looks like the bracket I need to make is going to go forward instead of aft like you suggested, or once I get it in there better it might be possible to just drill holes for the new xmember in the bracket that's already there because as you can see on the bottom picture the left side isn't too far off. I definately like how the new xmember has the threaded holes! ![]()
