1995 Granch Cherokee Cruise Control

I have 1995 Gc limited. When I put on the cruise control it acts like it seems to work, but it doesnt maintain speed. If I put it on at whatever speed it will slowly drop, but it will have the gas peedle pushed down some and it will keep rpms up. Any suggestions on how I could go about fixing this

Are you in hills? When you say that it "keeps the rpms up" is the engine racing? Does the engine race when you have the cruise off? And, as legalfee said, what engine do you have? How many miles?

Re: 1995 Granch Cherokee Cruise Control

I have a v8 with 126,000 miles on it. When I have tried to use the cruise control I was on route 1, which is predominately flat. When I get it up to speed and engage the cruise control, it does keep the rpms up, but the speed gradually declines. When the cruise control is engaged though the gas peedle, is pressed down some, and when you disengage the cruise control you can feel the gas pedal disengage. Also is a light supposed to come on on the dash when cruise control is on?

Re: 1995 Granch Cherokee Cruise Control

I would suspect a vacuum leak. And yes a green light should come on under the speedometer when cruise control is engaged.

Re: 1995 Granch Cherokee Cruise Control

Yea, I though a green light should come on under the dash. A light does not come on under the dash when you engage it. I found a link to website with a book on the 93 cherokke wiring from this website and I have been looking at it. So far I have found out, the computer shows no bad codes, and none of the fuses are blown I havent looked into in depth. Do any of you have any suggestions why the light on the dash isnt comeing on and where I would start to trouble shoot this vacum leak?

Re: 1995 Granch Cherokee Cruise Control

I'd start with the fuse for the cruise, then check the switch. When you press it, the dash light should come on.

Re: 1995 Granch Cherokee Cruise Control

It could be the switch. I have a PDF diagram that gives the ohm readings for no switch depressed, On, Resume / Accelerate, and Set / Coast. Let me know your e-mail address and I'll send it to you.

Re: 1995 Granch Cherokee Cruise Control

My email is [email protected] I rarely check that email so if you send me an email would you please notify me on here. It is werid though I could of sworn it was trying to work when I tried it on route one, but I guess I could be wrong. I checked the fuses on the passenger side in the cab and I checked the fuse under the hood they were both good. What is the best way to go about checking the switches in the steering wheel? How would I take it apart most safely with the airbag there?

Re: 1995 Granch Cherokee Cruise Control

My cruise control switch are on the bottome of the wheel. It was easy to remove it was only two screws. Taking the switches off I discovered that the switches themselves are still good(I put a volt meter across the circuit; with the on and off switch off it was a broken circuit; with the one and off switch on it was a complete circuit); I also discovered that there is power going to the switches. What do you think it could be if there is power going the switches and the switch is working the and the light still does not come on; on the dash. Is there a computer that controls the cruise control that could be bad?

Re: 1995 Granch Cherokee Cruise Control

Is the bulb in the dash good? (People have accused me of being simple).

If it is, then I'd think that the wiring from the good switches needs to be traced until you find the broken wire/component.

Re: 1995 Granch Cherokee Cruise Control

I am when it comes to troubleshooting electrical systems(but thats in commerical and residential Refrigeration systems); I dont really know anything about a cruise control system. When I checked the power going to the switch I was checking for volts not ohms, and I doubt the light on the dash is blown. I dont think the cruise control is kicking on at all, I think it just felt like it was because I was on route 1. Eventhough the peddle did stay pressed down for a little, but it only did that a couple of times. I am pretty sure the cruise control does not work and I was wrong with my earlier posts saying that it was trying to work. Also, the airbag light comes on once in awhile, I have only seen it do it a couple since I have had the jeep(I have had it about 2 months or so). The airbag light will come on and stay on for like a half hour then shut off for a second and comeback on. It came back on last night for the first time in two weeks and it is still on. Could this have anything to do with the cruise control?- I was also searching through old posts before and I found a link to a website(sorry I cant find the link), on which I got a pdf file that is about 30 or so pages long. It is called "Cruise Control System 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee", it gives detailed instructions on how to trouble shoot the cruise control the system. The only problem is, with all the trouble shooting it refers to a DRB-II, which I do not have and I am not quite sure what it is. What is a DRB-II? Also Legalfree I appreciate the diagram you gave me, but the switch I have has 4 pins and the diagram indicates 3 pins. I will check the resistance with the pins it indicates post it asap. All help is highly appreciated!
