99 gp gt - Before I check SES code

I just bought a 99 pontiac GPgt, w/ a 3800 series 2 v6, ~98k miles. ABS and trac off lights were both lit upwhen i bought it, but the car has driven like a dream. Yesterday the SES light came on, and the engine is revving noticably higher than normal, and there is a very noticable lack of power. I'm not willing to push it, but the car doesn't seem to want to go over 55mph. Taking it in for a code check on payday, but any ideas in the meantime?

Re: 99 gp gt - Before I check SES code

why wait till payday. a lot of places like autozone have the computers to read the ses codes from your car. it may be something very simple that isn't worth letting the dealer charge the hell out of you for. and the trac off and abs lights lit may mean that the speed sensor in one of your hubs is bad- therefore the lit abs light prob means your abs is disabled. so you should get that fixed

Welcome to AF!

I agree with accuab. If you have an Auto-Zone, Advance, or CSK parts store in your area, they will check the SES light for you for free. However, don't believe their code definitions. Write them down or have them do a print out, then post them here for proper definitions. They do this to sell parts, not because they're nice guys, and they don't always point you in the right direction. I also agree that the ABS trac/off lights most likely indicate a bad wheel speed sensor. You can visually inspect the front hubs for a broken wire and check resistance across the hubs wiring connector (it should be about 1k ohms). Other than that, it will require an ABS capable scan tool to pinpoint the ABS issue, and the scanners the box retailers use isn't ABS capable. You'll have to take it to a shop for that.
