Replaced Starter in 96 Jetta. Still won't crank
96 Jettal GL 5 speed manual.
The starter went out about a month ago. Wouldn't crank. Just clicked. I've roll started it when I wanted to go somewhere. Last week I replaced the starter with a new one from AutoZone. After install, it still won't crank at all, BUT, the emergency flashers started flashing for about 2 minutes every time the door was opened or the ignition key turned. They flash no matter what you do. Checked for power. It looks like the new starter is getting power from the battery - a voltmeter showed 11.4 volts. After 3 or 4 days, the flashers stopped flashing by themselves, but still won't crank. I can still roll start, but I can't figure out what to do next. Is it possible that I got a bad starter from AZ? Does the Jetta have some sort of security system that keeps the starter from working when it's replaced? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance! opcorn:

Re: Replaced Starter in 96 Jetta. Still won't crank
My 92 doesn't have the security system so I don't know, but I remember reading threads about what to do and how to reset it. Look through or search old threads. The answer is there somewhere.
