97 gcl not shifting to overdrive

Guys and gals im stumped. I think that either my transmission has finally started to go or im losing something else. It strated to idle real fst the other day toabout 2k then if it sat it would go higher, well on the way home from work it wouldnt shift into overdrive either. it shifts fine through the other gears. But we unplugged the battery and i think that reset the MAP sensor or whatever. But still no OD. up to 170000 miles now. help please....

Re: 97 gcl not shifting to overdrive

sounds like a vacuum leak is throwing everything off. The OD will not engage if it detects low vacuum. The engineloses vacuum under acceleration and the OD is set to NOT shift when under load.

I would look for hissing sounds under hood. I know its hard when engine is running. You may have a vacuum hose that came off by the tranny. Check there.

Re: 97 gcl not shifting to overdrive

Have it checked for engine codes, see if anything comes up. If not have your TPS tested.

A vacuum hose that came off anywhere, probably a large one from the sound of it.

Re: 97 gcl not shifting to overdrive

I just had to ask since the 97 transmissions are not vacuum controlled.

Ok um I cant find a vacuum hose so that would make sense. I have no check engine light or anything, (Other than the notorious "Coolant Sensor Bad" and Rear Lamp Failure" on the VIC. It could be the TPS you think? Im at a loss.

Re: 97 gcl not shifting to overdrive

There is a good chance your TPS has at bad spot at closed throttle. Did you check for vacuum leaks between the intake and head? You don't need to have a check engine light on to have a stored code, even more so for a transmission code.

Not much that can be done about the Coolant Sensor other then replacement. 80% of the time the Rear Lamp Failure is due to a burnt out bulb in the over head brake light (3 bulbs). the other 20% is a mix between a bad bulb combo and people burning out the lamp module with poor trailer wiring.
