1990 Lumina Euro 4 speed automatic transmission

I just got my Lumina running great with new fuel injectors and rear brakes so I thought I would tackle the last remaining problem of the speedometer showing an inaccurate speed. The car has the origional size tires and wheel rims.

I talked to the parts guy at Autozone and he said that is was the speed sensor VSS on the transmission. I replaced it with a Wells brand and it did not fit right so I took the guts out and put it into the old housing and it does not register any speed on the speedometer now and the transmission does not shirft out of 1st gear, plus I have a check engine light on my dash board!

Plus I accidently knocked off a connector off a sensor low on the engine block. I was able to put it back on but the end is a little damaged. What is that sensor for and can I purchase a new connector end?

My next step is to purchase a new delco brand VSS sensor part for around $120.00.

Is it correct that this vehicle does not have a speedometer cable and this VSS sensor on the transmission is responisble for registering the correct miles per hour on the speedometer and also tells the transmission when to shift?

Help.
