ignition switch change
I have a 90 vw jetta that I tried to change the ignition switch the one that connects to the key switch. I took the stering wheel and everything that I thought needed to take off. I can see the switch prongs ,but it looks like I need to take of the houseing around it. Is there some special tool needed or am I missing something. Right now I'm useing a dirct wire from the battery to a push button down to starter wire to start it.

Re: ignition switch change
There is a hole that you have to drill into the metal to get to the button you push to remove the switch. When you get a new switch, it give exact directions to where you have to drill the hole.

Re: ignition switch change
It's been a few years, but I believe you have to pull out the whole unit to get to stuff. If I remember right, pulling the cylinder was the first step. My memory is a bit fuzzy on this one, you may want to ask Boschmann. He seems to really know his stuff. I'm a weekend mechanic.

Re: ignition switch change
I just took off the steering colum and got to the darn screw on the ignition switch and put in the new one. It now works good but, having a hard time putting the steering colum to connect to the u joint.
