Another alternative: some folks have had success by loosening the engine mounts, placing a block of timber under the oil pan and jacking the engine up enough to get clearance to pull the starter.

I haven't personally needed to remove my starter - yet

Re: any one got ideas

There are about three known methods. One is to remove the 'Y' pipe. This can be problematic if the exhaust studs break, which is likely to happen. To reduce the chances of this happening, repeatedly soak with PB Blaster. The second option is to disassemble the starter and remove it in two pieces. Of course, you must disassemble to new one and reassemble it in place. The third option is to raise the engine as mentioned in previous post.

Re: any one got ideas

How hard was it to disassemble the starter? Any tips/recommendations?

I can see this being a project I might have to do within the next year or two.

Re: any one got ideas

not bad really , i turned the starter on end so the front "plate"was facing down and removed the 2 scew/bolts with a 9mm socket and med. extention, then fliped it the other way so the back was facing down and used the same for the 2 long bolts that run the full lenghth of the starter. with both hands i pulled the frond part off but be carfull of the internal gears at this point because as you seperate it ther is 5 roller bearings that are able to fall out from the plate being gone (about 1/4 inch long) 3 fell out on me .
I sat the part aside on oil pan, NEXT take the nut off the stud for the pos,(which i did after i had tried to pull the armature from the hosing) pull on the back side and it should come apart,

Gtting it out from its spot was still like a puzzle but i brought face plate back toward the exuast and down at same time, You have to remove a sheild plate that is on bell housing that wires go thru , i removed 2 bolts from that and the 3rd was up higher so i just pushed it back and up out of the way, THEN i was able to finagle it out, the housing was easer to get out than front gear plate,

I also did it this way because all exhaust would need to be totaly re done .
hope this helps was in a hurry so i hope i didnt mis spell much!!!!!
