Are 350's intergangeable?

If I wanted to buy a 350 to biuld up to eventually put into my truck, does it have to be thew same year as my truck or will any 350 just slide in?

I have a 95 Chevy K1500 w/ 5.7 350 engine and 4L60E transmission. My current engine hs a clearance issue in the main bearings, but will last me a while still. I am entertaining the though of purchasing an engine and tweeking it a little. Then when finished with the "like mnew engine", swapping it for the one in my truck. If I buy another engine to work on, is there a specific year range I am looking for or will any 350 engine work?

Chev 350 engines stay the same for a few years but.
Always check a salvage yard interchange book.
Same engine code helps.
If TBI fuel injection I would stay with a TBI engine.

Your 95 TBI is a Gen I block with a 1 piece rear main so any Gen 1 block with a 1 piece seal will work. The TBI heads have a different bolt pattern than 86 and older heads so be sure that use the right heads if you plan to keep the TBI.

your particular truck is a vortec i take it? i suppose that it doesnt make a difference with the block, but your intake manifold is specific for the vortec heads, since the intake manifold bolts are in different spots than conventional ones with other types of heads. your block i assume has provisions for a roller cam, though if you build a new engine it doesnt matter really, since that has nothing to do with whether it would bolt up. any small block chevy should fit in the frame, and i think the mounts are the same, although i wouldnt be surprised if they changed them in the nineties. i think the one piece versus two piece rear main needs different components in the back of the engine, it's kindof foggy, but i think perhaps the flywheel or flexplate is different (you people who know a lot can correct me if im wrong). and i also know that newer models have gas tank mounted electric fuel pumps instead of the old-school block mounted pump that is driven off a lobe on the camshaft.

95 would be TBI not Vortec. 96 Model Year was the first year of the Vortec. There are kits available to install Vortec (L31) heads on a TBI Engine (requires a Vortec Style Intake Manifold made by GM Performance Parts).

You can put any year SBC into the vehicle, you just have to use the TBI heads if you want to stay with TBI. I had a 1963 Chevy 283 from a Bel-Air in my 88 for a while. You don't have to have the same rear main seal system, you can have the two piece rear main. The flexplate will still bolt to it.

Broughy84, did that older engine allow you to use your trucs ecm? Did it have ports for allthe ensors?

A 2 piece rear main crankshaft is balanced different than a 1 piece rear main crankshaft (internal vs external). If you use a older block, you should use a flex plate that matches the balance.

Yeah, if you use the old heads and intake then you don't have to worry about the electronics on the top, the only other thing there is, is the knock sensor, which goes into the drain port on the side of the block, and the oild sending unit which goes in the port above the oil filter. An engine builder here in town assured me that the 265, 283, 305, 327, 350, are all internally balanced. The 400 SBC is externally balanced as are the 366, 396 and 454.

There really isn't that much of a change in the blocks, just the rear main seal I think is the main difference. And the threads on the old block will be in SAE instead of Metric, that was a problem I had.
