Xtended rear bilsteins w/ no lift
OK, I just spent about 1.5 hours reading through many posts on this. None answered these questions...
Can I use extended length bilsteins on the rear end with no lift? Is the shock, fully compressed, within the limits of the factory bump stop, or will the extended models limit compression before the bump stop does? How much total travel do the extended bilsteins give...i.e. what is the shock stroke measurements. I have been on bilsteins site, and see aftermarket models that allow for 8", 10", 12", 14", and up to 17" of total shock stroke. I ass-u-me the extended length ones from SLR fall into one of these ranges. Obviously the factory rear shocks are the limiting factor for the amount of droop, but I don't want to trade droop for compression. I have put an unnamed brand aftermarket shock on the rear of my X. It has a total of 10" of stroke, and happens to fall within the compression dimensions I need. They are, however, still limiting droop and also are way too softly damped. I would like to retain the option of a mild lift as well, so that is a determining factor. Any help, measurements, damper rates, experience you can provide is appreciated... |

They just barely make it. When fully compressed and against the bumpstop there is about 1/8" of the shaft exposed; or there was on my truck anyway. Not sure what the total travel is but they allow enough droop that my driveshaft almost touches the crossmember now that the lift is installed.

I used the exteneded length Bilstiens for a year and a half without a lift, no ill effects!
