97 explorer trans swap
I have a 97 explorer that got rolled for some reason....LOL!
Well, stupid me bought another one with a bad tranny. The wrecked one has the OHV 4.0 & the new one has the SOHC 4.0. The trannys look the same, side by side. Does anyone know if there are differences I should know about? Thanks! |

Re: 97 explorer trans swap
is it manual or auto tranny, well, the sohc flywheel is an 8 bolt and the ohv is 6 bolt, thats for start, the bellhousing is almost the same, the ohv on a sohc engine not all the bolts fit but that is no problem. ohv starter is bigger than the sohc starter,. just need the flexplate,

Re: 97 explorer trans swap
we just swap the engine in our ford explorer, we used to ran with a 4.0 ohv with a ford c4 auto trans, we just replace that engine with a 98 4.0 sohc with the same trans,. the only thing that we needed to do to use the same tranny, you need to use the ohv flywheel and from the sohc flywheel, cut the 8 bolt center and welded to the ohv flywheel and drill the remaining holes needed. that with this trans,.
what im saying here is that your trans manual or auto will fit on both engines but might need some job to make them work. |
