What's a reliable car for under $15k

My girlfriend currently drives a newer jeep which is killing her in gas and insurance, and she never has the oppurtunity to use it for four wheeling. She wants to trade it in for a reliable car which will get good gas mileage, but will still be attractive. My first suggestion was a 2000-2004 Jetta TDI, but coming across a used one in our area has proven difficult. I was just looking for other suggestions. She's been given an estimate of about 15K trade in on her jeep, but would also like a smaller car payment than what she's paying now, so a car in the 10k range should be optimal. Thanks for your help.
