96 blazer engine problems

my blazer just crapped out on me, and i have not a clue about cars, i cook for a living. i took it to tuffy and they of course found a ton of things to fix, and quoted me almost $3000, so im trying to see if anyone can help me troubleshoot so i can just hire someone private to fix it. heres what happened. first, i lost 2nd gear, so it wouldnt shift up (its an auomatic). then soon after the engine started shaking really bad and now it wont turn over at all. all fluids are full, and were full when this happened, and oil changes was up to date. please help me in any way you can, if anyone can. i need it fixed so i have my own transportation again.

Man not much to go on. Did you ask the people who looked at it what they found. Most shops will give you a written esimate as to what needs to be done. At least tell you.
Are there codes? It won't crank over at all? Battery or connections? I don't know what else to say.

As said not much good info.
Could be a minor or major repair needed.
I would suggest you look around for a good repair shop.
And get a honest good check out and estimate first.

Family friends coworkers neighbors business people and delivery people.
Mailmen and parcel delivery people get around and notice a lot of stuff.
Even a good parts house knows what shops are good and not good.
Chamber of commerce and better business bureau and city hall.
If you find a good referral to a repair shop go look them over and talk to them.
Look for a clean looking busy place with nice people running it.
Ask a few questions and ask about their qualifications and training.
Not all places have trained tech/mechanics.
If they do not find a place that does.
Even all dealers do not have all trained techs/mechanics.


Post back what they find.
