Re: 99 Windstar trans Prob ??

If you have had absolutely no prior warnings, no tranmission code messages, etc ... then there may have been only a sudden failure of ONE solenoid. I wouldn't know which. All those solenoids you listed are fairly accessible ... some under the end cover.

If you end up buying all the solenoids ... will cost about $200 ... I just did it last year with no luck. Ending up swapping out the tranny with a Ford rebuilt.

If you had a friend with a working tranny ... you could swap solenoids one-at-a-time. It may instead also be a harness issue. The valve body is pretty pricey ... it is also under that end cover. Removable while tranny is in the car, but its no push-over. I would not suspect the valve body other than the solenoids. The torque converter clutch went out on my tranny, new solenoids were not going to help... I had earlier indications

Re: 99 Windstar trans Prob ??

Thanks For a quick response .Their were no signs that this was going to happen no O/d light blinking,no Slipping ,no erratic shifting nothing just no gears after we came out of the store .We may just take the rebuilt trans route I guess i better decide..The 97 windstar we got still has the original trans in it and we just rolled 140,000 on that one and it still shifts like new.I guess they didnt make the 99's the same.thanks again

I priced out the three solenoids and ford said they were 18 each. A B C which are your gears. The Lockup TC is the only oddball. I think that was 60 bucks. Pressure reg is like 80.. I do know, The Valve body pins that connect to these solenoids wear and bind within the valve body, sticking the solenoids. They make a Bushing kit for them. If your a DIY check them if your gonna pull solenoids.
You can PinPoint test each Noid right from the top Connector of the transmission with a Volt ohm Meter. All that info is at AlldataDIY.com
Also, These trans like to blow the pump shaft, and its sudden. No sign of any problem, Then no Gears..

I wonder if the culprit is the transmission range sensor/neutral safety switch...since it was such a sudden problem.

Re: 99 Windstar trans Prob ??

I also meant to mention the pump shaft.

A simple test: Check the fluid level as always, engine running in Park. If the level is normal is pump is likely OK. If it is 1" or more higher than normal ... the pump is not "priming" ... likely a shaft broken, which usually wiipes out the valve body.

How many miles are on this tranny?

Re: 99 Windstar trans Prob ??

Thanks for all the replies the trans has around 60000 on it .I will have to get a subscrition for the alldata and check that. Also with the van running the fluid level is normal it did not go up or down when this happened. At this point i love the van to death never gave me any problems so I am steering towards putting the money in it to get it right again.. I again thank everyone for the info and hope i could fix this and not have to take it to a shop!

Re: 99 Windstar trans Prob ??

You may want to go to a local Ford service center and sit down and have a conversation with the shop foreman, tell him what you know about your problem and see what he "guesses". Then do the same with a few tranny shops around town. Shouldn't cost anything but time. You may find someone who sounds believeable and not expensive. I hope so ... I think you don't have a big problem.

Of course, you do have many miles on the tranny ... so you don't want to invest too many bucks on it when you could just replace with a rebuilt,
