2000 1500 silverado Power steering loud/lost??

Have a 2000 1500 4x4. Yesterday power steering stopped.

Turning wheel (either way) continues to make terrible squeeking sound, especially stopped. Checked ps fluid - reservoir is full and brownish color. Read on separate post where it could need flush??

Able to turn on faster speeds ok - worst seems to be stop/very slow - loud squeeking and hard to turn. Any ideas where to check first??

Not a full fledge mechanic here, meaning you'll have to explain some mechanical terminology used.

Any assistance appreciated.

Is the belt slipping?

Check the power steering fluid, had a malibu one time that was making horrible sounds while turning and hard to steer, popped the cap off the fluid container and it was all foam, give it a check.

Belt might be slipping (unlikely). Check for grease or oil on belt.

My guess is the PS pump.

power steering fluid on the belt will cause this... the pump leaks at pulley shaft then runs down to belt... remove belt and clean with dishwashing soap,...don't use chemicals that will damage rubber belt if it fixes problem try stop leak power steering fluid....then after leak stops suck out reservior and replace fluid with new....

it don't take much fluid on belt to cause this pulley to squeal...especially when wheels not rotating..

Re: 2000 1500 silverado Power steering loud/lost??

Trouble getting the ps pulley back on.

I went ahead and picked up a new OEM power steering pump w/reservoir. The pulley is pressed on, so had to pick up a pulley puller to get it off. Appears the pulley CANNOT be put back on until the pump is put back on right??

I can get the pump on, bolts tightened, but getting the pulley on is different story. I use the bolt, nut and washer that came with the pump - also have tried an actual pulley installer kit, with no luck. I can get the pulley over half way on the shaft, then the bolt that you turn to "push" the pulley on, gets really tight and will not push anymore. Even so that it "strips" out the bolt. I've taken it off and re-tried about half dozen times in case it's somehow going on at an angle. Seems with the shaft that it can't go on at an angle though.

Any ideas out there how to go about it from here??

Thanks,

Thanks,

when you removed the pulley from the new pump it is possible you caused the shaft end to be mushromed...may have to remove pump and file or emery cloth the defects also a noisy pump is usually air in fluid or the wrong fluid is used or contamination....of fluid....
