Fuel pump issue or loose connection?

Hi all, I have a 1991 pickup that I replaced the fuel pump in about year ago. I went to start it and it didn't start. I tapped on the gas tank with a piece of wood and it started right and never had any issue while running. Turn it off and it will not start unless I tap the tank while someone starts it. Weird once started it runs fine. what do you think? Bad pump or loose connection somewhere? I checked the fuse and it is fine.

well moving the accelerator pedal does nothing except it moves the TPS and it opens up the throttle and allows more air into the intake

you could have either issue, the fuel pump could be dying, or you could have a bad connection

only a person at the truck looking at it will be able to determine which

check the fuel pump relay, it may be dying
the fuel pump relay is used during cranking

and when it starts up and is running then it moves to the oil pressure switch

if the fuel pressure does not reach enough PSI during cranking then it will be difficult to start, if it will at all

if it has a bad or dying fuel pump relay is a real possibility here

try another relay and see if anything changes

Hey Randy thanks for the reply. I don't know if I made myself clear but I was not tapping the accelerator. It only starts if I tap the gas tank with something. It runs fine after that. I also noticed that the fuel gauge is somewhat off the mark of accurate. It will show 1/4 tank when it is actually empty.

hi there yeah i would vote for bad loose or dirty connection in the pump/sender unit first then

try replacing them, you can get replacement pump wiring pigtails from auto parts stores

this is most likely a bad non OEM pump.....only use gm fuel pump as these other pumps fail after a short period of time...
