Reprogram after changing MAF Sensor??

I apologize quickly for not having many details. I am going over to look at a 2000 Astro for a friend. He said it was hesitating/cutting out over 50 MPH and he took it to a local repairman. He got a MAF Sensor code. (Again, not sure of the code.) But when he replaced the sensor the van would not start at all. He told my friend that after replacing the sensor he would have to take the van to the dealer to have it reprogrammed before it would work. (I assume he means the PCM) Has anyone ever heard of that before??

He's feeding you a line of crap, no reprograming necessary. The MAF sensor is plug and play.

Check fuel filter, fuel pressure and leakdown rate, that would be a more likely cause for what you described.

Sometimes you have to make sure the DTC code has been erased. The computer sometimes stays in compensation mode till you do.

Re: Reprogram after changing MAF Sensor??

There are 5 different DTC fault classifications. MAF faults are type "A" and the SES light will turn off immediately when the fault is repaired. If the light is still on, the problem has not been repaired.

Re: Reprogram after changing MAF Sensor??

I finally got over there with a reader and got the following codes: P0102, P0340, P0440. They dont appear to be related to each other. The interesting thing is that the codes showed up as active and then showed up again as pending codes.

I will check the wiring for the MAF to ensure there are no grounds. My pressure guage seems to have grown legs. Happens in a house with a 16 year old and an 11 year old who know they can fix anything...
