What Cam?

I have a 302 5.0 bored .030 over with trw L3003f Flat top pistons, GT40 heads, Holly 750 cfm carb, comp cam double sping valve spings, hardend pushrods, weiand Xcelerator high rise intake rpm range of 1500-7000, im not really familar with the reasons for choosing a cam and lifters, so any advise would be greatly apreciated, i also wondered if some 5.0's had stock roller cams and lifters

93 5.0 mustang

Re: What Cam?

Stock fox body 5.0's from '87-'95 I know had hydraulic roller cam & lifters. They may have started earlier than that, I'm not sure.

To choose a cam we need to know a lot more info.
- What do you want to do with the car? Street? Track? Both? Which one the most?
- Which GT40 heads do you have? The 1.84 valve head?
- Auto or manual tranny?
- What gear is in the car?
- How much lift are your springs good for?
- What ratio rockers are you useing?
- Any power adder?
- Do you want a big cam sound? Or do you care?
- Where do you want to start building power?
- How high do you expect to spin the motor?
- What kind of power are you looking for?

Re: What Cam?

Since the springs are from comp call them up and ask how uch cam they are good for. You dont need a big cam. Hydro flat tap, .510ish lift and 230ish @.050 with a quick lobe sep is what I would suggest.

Re: What Cam?

Well if you want more power then dont go hydro flat tap. Just replace the stock hydro roller lifters and get a cam that fits. It looks like you may have a few things mixed up here. So we need to back up and get a little more info.

Ok, Is this motor the one that cam stock in the '93?
If not the what year is it?
If its the stock motor then you should have hydro roller lifters and dogbone retainer.
You should check with comp to see if the springs you already have installed will be enough for a hydro roller cam.
If not then upgrade the springs. (Valve springs are not a good place to cut corners).

Let me know what Comp tells you.

Personally, I would upgrade the springs, run the stock style hydro roller lifters, and a F303 cam on 1.7 roller rockers.

I currently have the F303 on 1.6 rockers cam in my car with a 351w .030. It picks up pretty good at about 2,000 rpms and pulls hard all the way to my preset rev limit of 6,000. I am considering an upgrade though, just because I want a little more cam. If I had a 306 or something then I would keep the F303 cam, but my bigger motor just needs more cam.

Re: What Cam?

yes this is the 93 motor, and i do have the stock roller lifters, comp said the springs are not good for a hydro roller because they do not have enough seat pressure, also so your clear im am goin carberated, i no that the 93 was injected but the ecm fried..

Re: What Cam?

If you are willing to switch the valve springs than I would suggest a F303 on 1.7 rockers.

Otherwise look for a comparable hydro flat tappet cam, just remember it wont make as much power.
