Humming in my left front wheel area

Hi everyone, for the last week I've noticed some noise that seems to be coming from my left drivers front wheel area. It's a low humming noise that gets higher as I accelerate and lower decelerating. My first thought was my wheel hub starting to go bad however, there's absolutely no play in the tire at 12 and 6 o-clock when I jacked the tire off the ground and no ABS warning light "yet". Could this be the first sign of that wheel hub going south?
Other than that possiblity, I haven't got a clue what else to look for.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this matter.

Re: Humming in my left front wheel area

Absolute yes. The hub bearing will start to sing/hum before it starts to disentigrate and become loose. Not a lot of time will pass though before that happens. Most parts stores carry several options for these. Do Not By The Cheap Ones. It's not a hard fix but gets rather expensive to keep buying cheap parts. Prices range typically from $90 to $200 at auto parts stores. If you have a garage do it for you, hard telling which parts they will use. Most parts stores give you a year limited warranty. Your garage may only give you 90 days parts and labor. They may have bought the year warranty part which means after 90 days they charge you for a new part and return the old one for a free refund. ( How do you spell double dipping?) You can buy your own and just pay them the labor!!! Too many complaints floating around in these forums about the cheap ones. Go middle of the road and you will be alright.

ABS won't come on till metal particles start moving around in the bearing housing. By then your hum is a roar.

Re: Humming in my left front wheel area

I have a 2000 Grand Prix GTP had the same sound and it was the left front bearing. I agree about not going cheap. I did it myself was not that bad just a little time consuming. I had a air impact wrench wich help a lot. I just took my time and got it done. I hate paying other people to do the stuff that I can do.

Re: Humming in my left front wheel area

definately sounds like the bearing. Fairly easy fix. just make sure you replace the correct one. Sometimes it may sound like it is comming from one side when it is really comming from the other. The best thing to do is jack it up and use a stethescope to make sure what side it is comming from. just have somebody rev it up for you. Just for the record I replaced both sides and I bought cheap ones from Car Parts Warehouse and they have lasted over 20,000 miles so far..... I may have just gotten lucky.
