Won't start for exactly ten minutes

Howdy. Just spent the last three hours reading threads and never got a definitive answer. Here are the facts. 2002 Cavy with 2.2 and 60k. Turns out it starts every time first start of the day. Then after turning off to go in store etc., it won't start ( 2-3 times in a day every couple weeks ) The theft light and CEL come on. It turns over fine. If I wait exactly ten minutes, not a second less it will start just fine. I read a few threads that mentioned bypassing the theft system to eliminate this problem. Does anyone know the root cause of this ( it is the original black rubber key ) and a fix other than snipping the yellow wire in the ignition housing. If we can get a fix for this i will post the process and pix of step by step repair. Thanks for the help.

Re: Won't start for exactly ten minutes

Hi, I ran into a similar problem on my Buick. Seems the keys have antitheft devices built into them and the sensor in the ignition switch wears out. Replace it and it will work again. You can buy some after market ignition switches , but they all require you to disassemble the steering column to install it and then you have to go to a dealer to have a new key made to fit the new switch before it will work. Kind of a drag, and $$$ too. The ten minute wait is for the tamper proof timer system to reset. My Buick only has a three minute timer, so I just wait for it to time out and try again. It usually works on the second try. The new switch for my Buick will cost $79 at the local Checker Automotive chain store, the new key and cutting it is about $65 at the dealer. My advice is to disable the antitheft system, which is what I plan to do, because my car is now 14 years old and no one wants to steal it anymore. I realy love the Buick Regal it gets 30 MPG HWY and is a big car these days.
