4.3L vortec v6 Running ruff intermittently.

Hi all, i own a 79 cj5 with a 4.3 L Vortec V6 from a 2001 bravada. It starts up everytime but i have to give it gas and usually hold it for a couple seconds for it to idle or it just sputters and shuts off. Once its started i have never had it die on me but ocassionally the rpm will drop while at a stop light and sounds like it might. It has a split personality when the problem first started it only seemed to happen when i would floor it but now it is just random.
Sometimes from start up or just sitting at a stop light. The jeep actually begins to vibrate and the exhaust begins to sound like its missing, ocassionally it will backfire when i accelerate, it feels like it has no power when it is acting up.
I would assume it is fuel related but i am far from a mechanic so any help would be greatly appreciated and if possible speak in laymans terms for the mechanically impaired.

Re: Running ruff intermittently.

The way to learn is to get some good repair info and watch or help some one else for a while.
A good service manual would be a start.
But on a modfied car it is going to be hard to learn.
Did you have the work done?
Or know who did?
They may be able to help you or.
It may be best to have a repair shop look at it.
And see what you have.

Re: Running ruff intermittently.

The work was done by the Previous Owners Mechanic.
Yes i do have the card of the mechanic, but his shop is about 2 hrs from my home.
I also posted tthe same ? on a jeep forum and they have suggested scanning the obdII port.

Re: Running ruff intermittently.

Do the basic test tune up stuff on it.
And If A OBD11 test port and computer system was installed on it check it.
Has the ign system or fuel injecton system and computer system been changed tover to a 2001 4.3 V6?
Give the mechanic a call.
And ask him what all was done on the change over?
