97 Taurus car dies while driving and not batt or alternator
I was driving home on the highway last night doing about 65mph when I started hearing this clicking noise and my it felt like my car was starting to studder. The car was decreasing in speed and everytime I tried to hit the gas the rpms would rise but I would get no power to the wheels. It doesnt feel like a trans slip at all either.I shut the car off at a wawa for 10mins started right back up and drove home fine. Then I took it out again today drove fine until I got on the highway then same thing happen it would rev but no power to the wheels and when I let off the gas it would studder and the car actually died this time while driving.I tried starting it over and over it would keep cranking and studder and eventually start up but when I let off the gas it just studdered and died. Also it seemed to idle when I had it in park but when I had it in drive it would studder rpms would drop and it would die any ideas. Its also throwing no codes no check engine light
PLEASE I NEED HELP IM ON DISSABILITY JUST HAD SURGERY AND NEED TO GET BACK AND FORTH TO THERAPY ANY IDEAS. |

Re: 97 Taurus car dies while driving and not batt or alternator
Where do you live ?
I would only charge for parts if you lived in RDU NC. You might want to check Thread Stumped! 1995 -> are using OBD II systems, and an old PLUGGED catalytic converter can choke a car out without throwing a code. Now a BLOWN out CAT with throw out P0420/P0430 ''Low catalyst'' A car needs oxygen to burn fuel + if missing it will Die. When you turned your car off ,your engine was able to take a breather! Thats why you were able to drive home. The key word was your Engine died! Take your car back on the highway, to see if she chokes up again. Any muffler shop should be able to check catalytic converter for 20 bucks. If CAT checks out ok ''good'',than lets look at fuel problems. Suspected fuel problems: 1) Fuel pump Replay 2) Fuel Filter 3) Fuel Pump 4) Primary fuel filter screen 5) Fuel Pump regulator I always like to check CATS on older cars first, because a bad catalytic converter will messup a good motor. A good shop can tell you, what % of blockage. During city driving you might not even notice you got a problem,it could be 50% blocked. Didn't anyone ever watch MCGIVER? Sounds to me like you are having a problem with fuel delivery. I would check the fuel filter and test the fuel pump!

Re: 97 Taurus car dies while driving and not batt or alternator
Which engine does your Taurus have? When the car starts and runs with the throttle open, does it run smoothly or a bit rough? Sounds to me like a misfire. Plugs and plug wires (or coil on plug) will probably take care of the problem.
OBD-II started as industry standard in 1996. A few models had OBD-II in 1995, but the Taurus was not one of them. -Rod |
