Question 1988 monte carlo ss spark problems

My 1988 Monte Carlo will occasionally just turn off. It allways happens at idol, at a traffic light or at a speed less than 15mph. Radio and lights still work but no spark. Starter will turn over but will not start. After 3-5 min car starts back up. Car runs great except for this problem. Motor is not origanal it has a ZZ4 crate motor. This has been going on for three years now. I have replaced the following with brand new parts. Distributor, MSD Coil, MSD igniotion box, plug wires and coil wire, Ignition switch on steering shaft. I have checked all the ground connections and battery connections. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks for the reply+++++

Re: 1988 monte carlo ss spark problems

Alot of engine sensors can become heat sensitive when they are failing. Most will work for a short time when the engine is cool and others will just flat stop working. Some of them that are affected are the CPS ( crankshaft position sensor ), the MAF ( mass air flow sensor ) and cam shaft position sensor.

Re: 1988 monte carlo ss spark problems

Try hooking up a semi-permanent test light to the distributor/coil wire (ign. hot on the distributor cap if you have a HEI style cap) and verify that you still have power to the coil. If you do, then follow it to where it stops, otherwise follow that wire backwards. Don't know if you have headers or not, but maybe you're melting a wire and shorting it. If nothing else, you can supply your own power to the coil/distributor and see if the power goes away, just don't forget to either unhook or switch off your self-supplied power after you shut the car off, or you could burn out your coil.
