Unhappy RT-TT turbo problem-please help

Hi. This is my first post. I have a mint RT-TT with 75K miles, never touched, all origional. It's my second stealth. I never drive the car hard. Last night I started having a problem with the turbos. While accellerating, the boost gauge goes all the way up to 14, and the turbos make noise, but the car seems to stall and have no power, so I have to get out of the throttle. The oil pressure is good. There seems to be no problems with slow accelleration, when I'm not kicking in the turbos. I'm hoping this may end up being a simple, inexpensive problem. If the turbos are bad, I have a pair from a parts deal that are supposed to be bigger and better. Should I use the opportunity to put them on? Any ideas? Thanks. My email is [email protected].

Re: RT-TT turbo problem-please help

what "noise" do the turbos make? if it's a screaching noise, its a bad turbo. If they make the normal spooling noise, thats good.

It sounds like fuel starvation, maybe fuel filter or plugs/wires. When was the last time you changed these things? The plugs/wires should have been changed when the 60k maintanence was done.

oh and welcome to AF

Thanks for the response! The turbos make the normal noise. I've only had the car for the last 1K miles, so unsure of the servicing. Thanks!

Re: RT-TT turbo problem-please help

Welcome.

I assume you're using the stock boost gauge, in which case, you're not boosting 14 psi, more like 10-12 psi depending on the year. What year is it by the way?

You'd best find out whether or not the 60k maintanance was performed. And if you're unable to find out, do it as soon as possible. You're risking your engine if you don't.

On to your problem, there's quite a few possibilities. The first place to start would be a pressure test of the intake system. Which would involve an air compressor and obtaining a pressure tester. You can make your own or buy one. Sounds to me like a hose may have blown off or come loose. Particularly the y-pipe or the small hose on the y-pipe near the throttle body. Do you have an air compressor?

If you don't have access to an air compressor, then a visual inspection would have to do. Follow the intake pipe from the throttle body and check for tighteness of all the connections and the condition of the hoses.

Let me know your findings.

Thanks. 1992. Stock gauge. Funny. I recently took it to the dealership for one of those hoses popping off. I'll look later today then send you another reply. Thanks!! Kevin.

Re: RT-TT turbo problem-please help

You were dead on!! I popped the hood, and the main intake hose going to the (I think) throttle body was loose. Tightened it up, and the car runs great. Thanks, again!!! Kevin.

always check the obvious things first before contemplating the worst (like a blown turbo, lol)
If it keeps poppong off, you may want to try an aftermarket y-pipe.

Re: RT-TT turbo problem-please help

Glad to help.

Like Blink said, if it keeps popping off get an aftermarket one (only like $20 on eBay, plus it shines) and use a T-bolt clamp and a better couple than it comes with. Those never come loose, unlike the standard hose clamps. Or just get T-bolt clamp, though i've never tried to use one on the stock y-pipe so i'm not sure if that would work.

Re: RT-TT turbo problem-please help

or just wedge a tennis ball between the battery and the intake pipe aka tennis ball mod

Re: RT-TT turbo problem-please help

It actually has an aftermarket Y pipe. I had the dealership install it. I think I got it on tighter, but the T-clamp sounds like a good idea. I also can see where the tennis ball mod would work. Where can I find a "T-clamp?" Thanks!

Re: RT-TT turbo problem-please help

I would imagine online, try www.3sxperformance.com. Unelss you know of a tuner shop in your area, that's where I got mine from.

Here they are: http://www.3sx.com/store/comersus_vi...dProduct=24505

Re: RT-TT turbo problem-please help

I'd look at getting your t clamps from IPS.

Theres another site that has awesome prices on them too, but I can't remember it off the top of my head

Re: RT-TT turbo problem-please help

you can also check with your local auto parts stores. Sometimes they have them.
