Timing belt trouble Ford Zx2 1998

Hi,

I'm having trouble with my car (Ford Zx2 1998). Its timing belt broke while it was being driven. Does anyone know for sure if it caused any damage to the engine (valves or anything else)

I already posted this at Ford forums but it must fit better here.

Thanks.

My Dayco book shows it is a freewheeler.

if its the ZTec motor (2.0 DOHC) you likely bent valves

If its the "split port" motor (2.0 SOHC) you're good to go

Is there a way to know which one it is?

It will say "ZTEC" on the valve cover, or "split port induction" on the valve cover

There is nothing on the engine or valves.

Re: Timing belt trouble Ford Zx2 1998

I should have looked this up before. The ZX2 only came with the dohc engine (that was the "high performance" version of the escort). I'm sorry to say, thats an interference engine

Vin code "3".....8th digit if you want to verify

its still possible that the valves didn't get bent....but its not very likely

How much does it normally cost to replace the engine (excluding the cost of the engine) and how much would the engine cost?

you shouldn't need to replace teh engine, just pull the head and have the head fixed.

Its still not cheap, but its a lot cheaper than a motor

Not only is the motor a lot more than the cost of getting the head fixed, the labor is quite a bit more for the motor
