Trouble code P1414

My mother-in-law has a 1999 Taurus with the FFV 3.0. SHe has been driving around for I don't know how long when I showed her that her service engine light was on... I have a scanner and came up with

P1414

Secondary Air Injection System Monitor Circuit High Voltage

I cleared it and when she was back two weeks later it was still there. Any idea what I should look at? Thanks!

Re: Trouble code P1414

Secondary Air Injection system = SMOG pump

Check for fuses or stuck relay!

Old cars had alot of problems with pumps that locked-up,because of age + just not
being used.

Re: Trouble code P1414

Sometimes water gets in them and during winter, they freeze and destroy the internals.

Re: Trouble code P1414

I don't think I have ever heard of a Smog pump, where do I find this and test it? Thanks again!

Re: Trouble code P1414

The smog pumps were used in the late 70s and early 80's and were belt driven. The GM pumps in particular seized up quite often and would burn through the belt.

On the Taurus, my recall is the air pump (which is electric on the Taurus) is located in front of the right front wheel, behind the inner fender liner.

Re: Trouble code P1414

According to the factory service manual, "DTC P1414 indicates electric AIR pump commanded off, but PCM indicates electric AIR pump is on."

"Possible Causes:
-- Open EAIR circuit.
-- Open AIR pump ground.
-- EAIR circuit short to power.
-- Damaged AIR pump.
-- Damaged solid state relay.
-- Damaged PCM."

If you'd like a PDF copy of the diagnostic routine to troubleshoot this code, send me a Private Message with the request AND an e-mail address for you that can accept PDF attachments.

Also, from what I can tell from a quick look in the manual, the AIR pump is on the left side of the car, behind the bumper.
