Squeaking noise

OK, well I do not know too much about cars so I figured I would post here. Well, my 1997 GMC Jimmy wouldn't start for some odd reason, so I ended up replacing the starter and the alternator about 2 days ago. Well, now when I start it up, and start driving the car makes a squeaking noise that lasts for about 5 minutes or so once I start driving. The noise stops once I press the brake pedal at all. After the 5 min. or so of driving it, the noise stops and it may possibly squeal really quick at random times after that. I was thinking it could be the brakes, but could that be possible because the noise stops when I press the brake pedal. I was also thinking(hoping) it could be the fact the car is trying to break in the new parts. Let me know if you have any idea. Thanks

Welcome to AF. Couple of things come to mind. First it sounds like it more than likely would be your front brakes needs to be replaced. That sound that you hear might be the warning feelers that tell you to replace A.S.A.P. before damaging the rotors. Second thing could be your front bearings could be going bad. Inspect and replace as needed. Post back your findings.

Sounds like the wear warning clip on the disc pads is doing its job. It is a small thin piece of steel that sticks up off the end of the pad. When the pad wears to the point of suggested pad replacement thickness, it starts to scrape and makes a sqealing sound as it vibrates along the rotor. When you apply the brakes, enough pressure is applied that it doesn't squeak. When the rotor runout pushes the pads back, it again is in position to squeal. It will continue this process until you change the pads or tear up the rotor with the pad backing plates. Consider yourself warned !!!

It could also be loose bearings in the front hub especially if it makes the noise while turning. This leans the rotor assembly into the caliper and cause the pads to squeal also especially if the pads are worn. Hitting the brake forces the rotor to center itself and the noise goes away.

Someone else has told me that it could also be a belt...Are you guys pretty much positive about the brake pads or is it just a possibility. Either way, I'll get someone to look at it today or tomorrow to be sure.

If it was the belt. It would be making noise when you rev the motor, and you don't have to be moving. In your case your noise is while your driving and stops when you press on the brakes. Take a look at your brake pads and front bearing. Post back your findings.

I got the problem fixed. It turned out to be the front brake pads. Thanks for the help guys, I can tell I'll like it here.
