Nitrous system in an LT1

Anyone have first hand knowledge with a nitrous kit in a lt1? Does a Dry or wet system work best? How big of a system?( I was thinking around 75 - 100 shot) Also what if Any other modifications that need to be performed other then installing the kit(I know my timing advance would need to go back to stock). Approx. cost & good system brands? I was told the 4l60e trans is good to 400hp. Thanks Any & all relevant info is greatly appreciated.

Re: Nitrous system in an LT1

Either wet or dry can work, I would go wet especially with stock injectors.
Rrequired mods I would say are headers and exhaust, cold air intake, Racetronix fuel pump and wiring, colder plugs.

You could get by on stock timing if you just put 93 octane in it as stock tuning is meant for 87 octane.

That said a Mallory 685 box is a good investment. Window switch to shut off the juice during the tranny shfts, spark retard, and rev limituing all in one box, along with stronger spark.

Really I would wait till the car is well modded to put nitrous on. If it is all choked up by stock parts it wont gain you much. Trust me, my NA car is faster than many with nitrous because many guys think they can do nitrous and skip on other mods and all they do is get little out of the nitrous.

Re: Nitrous system in an LT1

I have all those mod except the plugs and pump, will the stock pump keep up with about a 100 shot?? what plugs would u reccomend i replace with, also what is the mallory 685 box? I have the hypertech power programmer installed currently, but was told to take out any timing advance w/ a nitrous setup. I've never run nitrous , I was suprised to hear off a window switch for the cut off, i was under the impression that it could be left "on". Thanks for your info

Re: Nitrous system in an LT1

NGK TR6 or a Autolite 103maybe a 104 if the 103s foul in normal driving, gapped a little tight say .040. NO PLATINUM with nitrous.

The stock pump is risky, if it fails to feed the motor enough fuel and the nitrous system stays active it can do major damage fast, fuel pressure safety switches help but I would prefer to have engough fuel pump and not rely on a safety to shut the nitrous off.

The Mallory 685 is an ignition box that handles a lot of the usualy functions that are good to have with nitrous. The window switch function allows you to have the nitrous stay on just from say 3000 to 5000rpms and shuts it off so the tranny has less power to cope with during the shift, helps longevity.

The spark based rev limiter is good too because the stock system shuts off fuel if the engine revs too high which will instantly destroy the motor if the nitrous is on, so it is good to have an ignition limiter set lower than the stock computer's limiter.

The Hypertech is not really good for anything and it actually cost MORE than real tuning software that lets you make almost infinete changes to about everything the computer controls.

Nitrous looks attractive because the kits are priced cheap at say $600 BUT to run one safely and effectively you should have a bottle heater, ignition box and other stuff that easily ends up doubling the true cost.

Another reason to use a window switch is to keep from activating at too low an rpm which can create too much cylinder pressure and damage pistons, generally it is considered safe to only turn it on after 3000rpms on a LT1.

I should say I have never run nitrous either but I have read up on it and am contemplating it for the future, first though I need to put a rollbar in the car though because in my case adding nitrous would make the car faster than 11.49 and I would get kicked off the track for not haveing the rollbar.

There are a couple b-body clubs based out of your general area, should try and hookup with one and see what people have done.

I get down to Great Lakes Dragaway periodically, expect to be down there early June, if you want I can give a heads up and you can see a couple modded LT1 b-bodies.

Thanks for the excellent info, still deciding if I should give it a go. I've also been thinking of going to great lakes, havent been there in ages. Yeah let me know when I'd love to check some nice b-bods out.

Tough to hear much at that track. It is located between Milwaukee and Chicago so they are accustomed to big crowd and run you through FAST meaning you are in the waterbox before the other cars leave the line sometimes burnouts even start while there are cars on the line.
