oil pressure drop

I have a '98 Dakota and when I come to a stop the oil pressure gage drops to zero. This does not happen all of the time. I rev the engine and it comes back up.

I have the same issue with my 99, doesnt do it all the time, just when it's in neutral sometimes, put it in gear and disgage the clutch and it rises back up. Whats the deal, is this normal or bad, is my oil pump goin out or what?

It could be a partially plugged sending unit. I would tee off of it and put a mechanical guage on it to see what it is really doing. Sometimes, if there is a little sludge in the electronic sending unit. It will read lower than it should.

I hav the same prob in my 96' Jimmy... except wheneverever it happens my fuel pressure will also drop for no apparent reason. Its almost like a circuit has to much res on it and trips.

- Just curious, u guys got any mods on ur trucks, like aftermarket 4x4 lights, or a good thumpin' stereo system, or any electrical add ons?

I have some subs and a stereo installed, but no amp, shouldnt be pullin that much power.

If I put my brakes on hard sometimes, i will hear and feel a pop and the oil pressure drops out completely, then comes back a little. If you just let off the gas and/or sometimes put it in neutral, the pressure starts to slowly fall, till you engage the gear again.

dont have a guage so im not sure bout the gas pressure though

it is normal for oil pressure to drop when braking or sitting at idle, and then return when you hit the gas. As long as you have some pressure your good. I would seriously take out any aftermarket electrical accessories you have, unless you get an alternate power supply source like a capacitor or an amp, and even they are only so good.

I used to have 2 12'' JL's 2 10'' JL's, And for them I ran a 1 farad Cap, with two rockford amp's, and it still had a power draw that was noticible. If that draw is too excessive, it will rob power from other engine components, and accessories.

I would use a gage and check as pressure dropping to zero is very bad. A plugged strainer is another possibility. You want at least 10 psi at idle.
