1999 Grand Cherokee Cruise Control just takes off and sends you flying when engaged!!
99 Grand Cherokee Laredo -When you apply the Cruise Control, it just takes off like you pushed the gas to the floor. If you hit the brake, or cancel, it will shut off. Is this a common issue, or does anyone know where to start?
Any ideas are appreciated!! |

Re: 1999 Grand Cherokee Cruise Control just takes off and sends you flying when engaged!!
I've seen this happen when pressing "resume". Are you pressing the "resume/accelerate" button, or the "set/on" button? (the buttons might be named something slightly different, but those are the typical functions). If it happens when hitting "set", it sounds like a bad cruise control switch.

It happens when you hit the set button. If you just turn the cruise on, it is ok, but when you hit set, it take off like a rocket. Let me know if this sounds like the switch as you mentioned. THANKS

I'll check the buttons on my '94 (although I don't know if they're the same as the '99). Here's something to test. When you're on an open road, set the cruise at the lowest speed where it will allow you to set (usually around 35 MPH). Then slow down to well below that (say 15 or 20) and hit "set". When it floors it, see if it levels off at 35 (where you set it before). It sounds like the switch or computer is working improperly, but this test will confirm that it's returning to the existing set-speed and not just flooring it indefinitely.
I'll check the buttons and get back to you. |

Well, it is fixed. I removed the cruise servo, under the battery tray, and found the bottom was blown out. Apparently, the car was in a wreck some time ago, and the bottom of the unit, where the wires plug in, was busted.
