Blown a catalyatic converter!

P0420 - Catalyst Efficiency problem. (Bank 1)

Bank 1 = cylinders 1,2,3,and 4.

Action taken:

1) Removed pre/post Cat oxygen sensors off passenger side catalyatic converter.
2) Checked back pressure on CAT = 0 lbs.
3) Stuck a wire down the pre cat oxygen hole.

YEP! The brick is 100% gone.

4) The oxygen sensor was bent too.
5) I'am just going to replace the one CAT for now.

I wounder ,if I could get away with sticking a oxygen simulators on bank 1 ?
Will The Engine run like its suppose too ?

CATS are around $75 each ? @ PartsPlusAutostore.com
2000 LS V8?

What would you do?

Re: Blown a catalyatic converter!

I don't understand why you're considering an O2 sensor simulator, how's that going to solve the converter issue?

You essentially have a straight pipe now. If you put a converter simulator in place of the pre- or post-converter sensor, it will likely give you the same results that the real sensor will provide. Unless there is a simulator that is intended to simulate the rear converter. I've never looked into the simulators, so I don't know if they have Sensor 2 simualtors that respond very slowly and move very little off of 0.45V.

If you found a source of the converter for $200, I would replace the converters with the appropriate part, figure out where the guts ended up (resonator/muffler), clean the debris out, and know that I'm getting the proper fuel efficiency and emissions. At the cost of fuel, the cost of the converters could be paid for pretty quickly if it keeps the fuel efficiency in the correct band.

Re: Blown a catalyatic converter!

6) I replaced one bad CAT on bank 1 (passenger side) with one
I bought from www.catalyticconverterwarehouse.com $190 (Free shipping)
''Made in Canadia'',I didn't want one that was made in China.

Note: Cleaned all four oxygen sensors (both Banks) with CRC MAF sensor cleaner.

CAUTION-

A a Speed bump,or a hole in the road can damage a CAT.

The suspenshion is firm, thus can damage a CAT.

As long you replace bad CAT ASAP,the other CAT should be fine.

If Not! Poor Emmissions will cause other CAT to plug and Fail.

The problem is resolved!
