oil leakage

Hello fellas,
Driving 84 camaro, 2.8 v6, 5 speed manual trans. Now leaking oil. I'm told it may be the main rear seal but i'm not looking to drop the trans if i don't have to, to replace the gasket. However i'm told it could be the speedometer oil seal. The speedometer needle does bounce around when cruising. Any input would be appreciated

Re: oil leakage

I had a 2.8 that I couldn't find the leak on, it wound up being a valve cover gasket. It was bad in the back, oil ran down and wind blows it everywhere. I would triple check everything before pulling the tranny...

Re: oil leakage

funny you say that. started lookn' over the motor and saw significant amount of oil all over the exhaust manifold and block... basically everything under the valve covers. So decided to replace the gaskets. That, on the 2.8 requires taking upper/lower plenum, fuel rail n' injectors out to get access to cover bolts. The valve cover bolts were terribly loose along with a rotted quark gasket....
