Exhaust Pipe Soot

95 Metro with 180,000 miles

My tail pipe looks pretty black inside. I also have some soot all over the back of the car below the rear window. Is this normal?

All in all I would say it is pretty sooty back there.

No problems with car, and engine runs nicely.

Re: Exhaust Pipe Soot

You might be running a little rich. A new 02 sensor may help, but if you have a leaky fuel injector it won't.

You can get a used FI at junk yard rather cheaply. Rebuilt ones cost an arm and a leg.

Does your car burn much oil? It would also be worth your time to do a compression check. It is rather easy to do and the testing unit can be bought at walmart for about $25. The results will give you the condition of your engine.
