96 Accord leak
My sons 1996 accord has a constant drip coming from the right side of the motor (4cy). I think it may be the water pump, as I see no hoses in the area where the leak appears. How difficult a job would this be and what do you suppose a garage would charge. Thanks!!!

Re: 96 Accord leak
for an avid mechanic with the right amount of tools about 5 hours now multiply that by 85$ per hour thats just labor not including parts also you will save yourself alot of money by doing the job yourself and the water pump incorporates the timing belt so the timing belt has to be removed in order to replace the water pump which means you have to remove the main pulley aka harmonic balancer but if you know what you are doing you will save at least 6 to 700$ easy i would do it myself just to pocket that kind of money

Re: 96 Accord leak
Could you please define the "right side".
If this is a driver side and this is a water pump the bill may run into something around $700 since this is envolved with a timing belt and balancer belts replacement. This is around 4 hours of labour. But you need to get a closer look. It may be just a leakign hose. It may be a loose hose clamp. Good luck, Sam

Re: 96 Accord leak
The difficult part is breaking loose the harmonic balance bolt. Once you get through this, the rest should go smoothly. I am working on a 96 accord now, same job. I plan to replace the water pump, timing and harmonic belts and idle pulleys. My impact wrench with 1000 foot-lbs of torque can't break it loose and suspect lock tight was used on the harmonic bolt threads the last time the timing belt was replaced (this is a used car). So, my next step to find and use a hot torch to get the bolt red hot and to burn up the lock tight, then, attempt to break loose the nut. A project likely for next weekend.
Good luck |

Re: 96 Accord leak
I forgot to add that I am using a harmonic (crankcase) pulley remover tool. It is needed to keep the pulley from rotating when I am trying to break the bolt free. Amazon has one on sale for $15-16. Shipping is about $6-7. See link:
http://www.amazon.com/Powerbuilt-648...c+pully+holder Also, the bolt has right handed threads. To loosen it you rotate it counter-clockwise. Phil |
