Plugs and wires

I'm planning on changing the plugs and wires soon in my car but I was wondering what kind I should get. I have an 02 GT. I recently noticed that the car somehow has the original wires ( I think) at 150,000 miles. At least I haven't changed them and they still are numbered so I think they are original. I have had no problems whatsoever out of them or the plugs but figured its time they should be swapped out. I figured stick with the AC Delco plugs and I guess the Autolite wires. Dad said I shouldn't try to remove the original (if they are) plugs. He said to let someone else do it because they have been known to break off at the engine. I personally think its no problem but figured I would ask. Also how hard is it to get to the back plugs. It looks as if there is ample room to get a ratchet back there with an extension attached to it, but like I said, I haven't changed them before so don't really know.

Re: Plugs and wires

I'm looking to do the same thing. I'm looking at ZZP for plugs & wires. More specifically the NGK Spark Plugs - TR6.

Re: Plugs and wires

I've always had good luck with the ac delco rapid fire plugs, and i agree, go to zzp and get the oem wires for about the same price you would pay for aftermarket sets. But if the car runs fine, why replace them. You probably won't see any inprovement.

If his car has 150K miles, than it's better to be proactive than reactive.

I agree if you are referring to replacing the ignition wires. By the time he gets done pulling and tugging on the rear bank wires high probability a boot will come off so they will need replacing anyways especially if the orginals have been in there for 150K miles. Or the possibilty of a misfire DTC and SES/CEL light later on.

When installing new wires be sure to use dielectric silicone grease on the tips of the spark plugs and inside the rubber boots. New AC Delco Premium Silicone 7mm wires will have it pre-applied.

Another excellent aftermarket ignition wires for the cost is the Taylor 8mm Spiro Pro.

Also, be careful and do not damage the metal insulator/heat shields.

Re: Plugs and wires

Another choice for aftermarket plugwires is CarQuest, their top of the line plugwires.CarQuest sells a cheap line and their top of the line plugwire set.The top of the line set is the better set.It is a good idea to put antiseeze compound on the threads of the new plugs.

Re: Plugs and wires

The plugs have probably been changed at some point, unless you are the original owner. Check the gap if you take them out, they will probably be about .020 big if they are the original plugs. The car is only 6 years old, so i wouldn't worry about them being stuck or breaking when you try to take them out. They are pretty easy to replace, but make sure you blow around the plugs with compressed air before removing them. Otherwise, 150,000 miles of dirt and whatever else can fall into your engine. Good luck!

Re: Plugs and wires

Not if they are numbered. See the OP's post #1. That would mean they are most likely the original Delco Packard 7mm wires that were installed at assembly and most likely the original spark plugs.

Easy check look for the AC-Delco "double platinum" plugs:

Stock..........41-921

Of course, we are only speculating until the Op weighs-in.

BTW - I've yet to have all of the original wires stay intact during spark plug replacement or not break so I am assuming all is original.

Re: Plugs and wires

GM did discontinue some of the platnum plugs and replaced them with another part number in their place.Believe me,ran into that from The Carquest parts store when ordering parts and switched plug numbers on a certain GM vehicle.Sometimes you can get plugs cheaper at the dealer than the parts store and check on this.

Re: Plugs and wires

The OEM AC Delco 41-921 double platinum plug was discontinued but actually are still available from certain parts sources to include different heat ranges but obviously not from CarQuest. The AC Delco 41-101 Iridium is now the AC Delco recommended plug on stock SII 3800 L36 & L67 engines. Incidentally the AC Delco 41-101 Iridiums are made by NGK for GM.

Also, some L67 GTPs VIN "1" came from the factory with the NGK double platinum PTR4B-15 which are still readily available.
