2003 brake squeak

It is getting really annoying! We've replaced the pads 2 times the driver side rotor bled the system but still a squeak emerges from the passenger side front of the car. What could it be?

Re: 2003 brake squeak

Johnny may be on to something here....

Assuming that was a typo, then you need to inspect the way the pads are wearing on the rotor. Is there a ridge on the inner or outer edge of the rotor that is polished from the friction material rubbing on it? If so, that could be the source of the noise.

Did you properly install all of the spring clip thingies that help reduce vibration of the pads? Did you clean and lubricate all contact points with a high-temp brake grease? Did the original pads have shims, and if so, did you install shims on the new pads? If you answer yes to all the above, then you may want to have the passenger side (or whichever side is squealing) rotor machined and ask the shop to put a non-directional finish on the rotor.

Re: 2003 brake squeak

You may consider beveling with a file the leading and trailing edges of your pads if this squeak is occurring while braking. If it ocurrs all the time, but think it's the brakes still, you may have a dragging/stuck/sticky caliper. Supposedly, camferring the brake pad edges reduces chattering, which may sound like squeaking. I've even seen a few pads made that way.

Re: 2003 brake squeak

Hey I had the same problem on the wife's car. Kept replacing the pads and a couple weeks later sure enough the squeek was back! Turned out to have debris behind the piston in the caliper. Put a new caliper and more new pads on about 9 months ago and haven't heard a squeek since. Hope this helps

Re: 2003 brake squeak

Little update. I put a new rotor on the passenger side. I also put the bevel on the edges. Still squeaks. The only thing I have found out is that the brakes only start to squeak after you do a couple hard brakings like after they really heat up.

Re: 2003 brake squeak

How positive are you that the squeak is coming from the passenger side? Though this generally isn't recommended, you may want to try swapping pads and rotors from one side to the other to see if that has an effect. Also, what grade of pads are you using? You may want to consider spending a bit extra and going with ceramics if you are not already. At least then, if you still have the squeak, you'll at least have better braking performance.

Re: 2003 brake squeak

I don't know for sure. It sounds like it might be coming from the driver side now I am not sure though. The only thing I can think is the driver side rotor might be slightly warped.

Re: 2003 brake squeak

Maybe somebody can help with this. With somebody else driving the car it now sounds like the driver side REAR is squeaking. This has drums on the rear so what could it be.

Re: 2003 brake squeak

Rear drums squeaking could be a simple matter of too much brake shoe dust accumulated in the brakes. Or, you could have a wheel cylinder that has leaked brake fluid onto the friction material.
