89 4X4 1500 Transmission Leaks

The tranny on my 89 4X4 is leaking somewhere near the front. I changed the pan gasket and filter but it didnt stop leaking. Can anyone tell me where else it could be leaking. I've checked the lines and its not leaking there. Thanks.

Filler tube or TV cable cracked convertor or pump seal or pump o ring or even vent on top?
Does it leak sitting or running?

Pull splash pan and see if leak is coming from front pump area.

Post back what you find.

I will check the other areas and post what I find, but It only leaks while running and warmed up.

Pull the spash cover and get it good and warm and look for leaks in that area.
To find hard to find leaks a leak dye helps and clean off old leakage to.

Re: 89 4X4 1500 Transmission Leaks

I pulled the dust guard and ran the truck today. The fluid runs down the back of the torque converter after it gets good and warm. What would cause this? Thanks

You are welcome.
Could be front seal or converter snout leakage.
Any fluid running down the front pump?

Either way it will have to come out to replace seal or converter.

Make sure the transmission is working good otherwise.
When it is out have a close look at the pump busing and converter snout.
Remember front seal usually do not leak or wear out unless there is other things causing it to leak
I always like to pull front pump and reseal it and check pump out.
A good transmission ATRA or ATSG hand book will cover the drill out hole deal.
Some of them in them years needed the front pump inner drain hole drilled out to take pressure off of front seal.
Also install the front seal lock in ring over the front seal.
Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: 89 4X4 1500 Transmission Leaks

Thanks. Is there a manual that shows how to take out and replace the pump seal available. I have Changed tranny's and torque converters before but have not tackled a pump seal before. I would like to have all the info I can since I have to pull the tranny to fix it to make sure it wont leak again.

You are welcome.
Transmission parts places sell the ATSG and ATRA transmission repair hand books.

May be some info here.

Or here.
This is a free online Service Manual site that includes TSB and RECALL information, although not perfect quite helpful:

http://www.oplin.org/databases/proxy...et.com%2fautoa sp%2fframerq.asp

for library card number enter 123456789 submit, submit Hudson Library, scroll down to AUTO REPAIR REFERENCE CENTER, pick year, make and model, presto you have info that will be helpful.

Re: 89 4X4 1500 Transmission Leaks

I think the tranny is going and I am pulling it this weekend. Do you know if I can take a good 2wd 700r4 and exchange tail shafts assemblies to make 4wd 700r4. I have a good 2wd 700r4 and torque convertor available if this is possible. I appreciate your help

Re: 89 4X4 1500 Transmission Leaks

What year is the 2W?
Yes tail shafts can be switched but the transmission will have to come apart to do it.
Good luck

Re: 89 4X4 1500 Transmission Leaks

Do I just unbolt the rear tailshaft and replace it with the 4wd and transfer case? Or do I have to pull the guts out of the tranny? I will be replacing seals as the 2wd set for over 6 months, but the price is right for a tranny with less than 10k on a rebuild.

Re: 89 4X4 1500 Transmission Leaks

The 2wd tranny came out of an 88 Chevy truck. I checked it out with mine sitting close and it appears to be identical(electrical connectors and mechanical hookups except of course the 2wd tail shaft. Both trannys have MD8 in the casting number on the passenger side of the bellhousing.
