fuel leak where filter line meets tank line
hello. i have a 1990 Cutlass Ciera 3300. i just replaced the fuel filter, and now there is a leak from the "quick connect" area where the nylon line, just upstream from the filter, meets the metal tube coming from the tank (pictured). when i was removing the old filter, i noticed some drips coming from that same spot as i was jimmying the "quick" connectors off. Furthermore, i had noticed recently a smell of raw gas recently every once in a while, so that could've been the culprit. i haven't run or even started the car yet, because when i turn the key in the ignition, i can hear the fuel spilling from that spot under the car. it does for a few seconds before it stops, but it's a considerable amount of gas. i definitely pushed the "quick connector" all the way on until it clicked, and then a little more for good measure after i noticed the leak. could it be the fact that the metal line coming from the tank is so rusted? any and all help is greatly appreciated. |

Re: fuel leak where filter line meets tank line
Yeah I can tell you from that pic that you need to replace those rusty lines.
Could have rust hole through the line leaking or its cracked, either way they have to be replaced or you will continue to have leaks, and at close to $3.50 a gallon, you dont want to waste gas! You should be able to buy these from most auto part stores. Or if you found a used ones that werent rusted, but they probly will be.

Re: fuel leak where filter line meets tank line
actually, i think i figured out what the problem was. i replaced the old filter (which was a Fram) with a new Perolator from pep boys, and when looking at it from the outside, the "quick-connect" part looks the same on both, but if i look in the ends, the old Fram has a much smaller inside diameter. it even looks like there's an extra little part in there to make it fit the metal fuel line.
plus, when i took off the new Perolator, there was no gas in the line whatsoever, which seems to me to say that no fuel was even reaching the filter, it was all just spilling right out on the ground. i dunno if the one pep boys gave me was missing a part, if they gave me the wrong one, or if the one they gave me was just defective. tho you may be right about there being a hole, xero --that would explain the fuel smell even before i changed the filter |
