Post Whats the horsepower rating?

I went to the local junkyard to pick up a small block for my S-10. we looked around for a bit before we decided to go with a 350 from a 92 chevy caprice with 88k miles (or at least thats what the odometer read). The only problem is you have to pull whatever your need yourself. So after pullin the motor and strappin it in the back of my truck and taking it home, I noticed when we were putting the motor on an engine stand that the back was stamped 5.0L. Which would mean its a 305. Someone told me the horsepower rating but i cant remember. Does anyone know what the factory horse power rating is? Even more would I be okay swappin out the 4.3 in my truck now with the 305 or would i be wasting my time? Should i go look for a 350? the only thing is i am trying to keep the motor fuel injected so i shouldn't have to do much for the swap. I think the horsepower rating for the 4.3 is around 170-180 horsepower.

Re: Whats the horsepower rating?

The 91 4.3 V6 VIN Z was rated at 160 HP / 230 TQ. I'm guessing the 305 in the caprice was the LO3. That was rated at 170hp. So for all that work involved in the swap you would only be getting 10 more hp and maybe 20 more ft lbs of torque. If you are going to swap in a V8, definately go with at least a 350.
