thump

When accelerating fast, there's a thump at the drivers side, under the hood.. I can feel it on my left resting food, and sometimes through the accelerator.

This recently started.

What can it be?

My battery is on the right side, not the left, which is where the sound is originating from.

Also, my battery is bolted down by that clamp.

Re: thump

It's your driver side engine mount.

How hard is this to fix?

Will I be able to drive home without my engine falling out?

You will have to lift the driver side of the engine to clear the lower mount, but it's not hard to do. And no, the engine will not fall out.

Re: thump

Ok, my father tested the motor mounts.

He had me shift into drive and reverse, holding brakes and hit accelerator.

He says the mounts are fine.

Any other possibility?

It's the mount. These have shell mounts in them, that guarantee (within reason) the engine will not move about too far, should the rubber break up or otherwise become defective. You won't see a lot of movement doing a 'brake test' with these mounts, only hard acceleration (hard enough to lurch the car forward with standard brake pedal pressure). The thump is one HUGE symptom.

Re: thump

Is it safe to drive till I get them replaced? (I'm gonna replace both then)

I start my new/first job Monday, and I need to make it there, and won't have the time to fix it by then.

Re: thump

UPDATE: I did a test while driving down the road.

Most of the time the thump would happen as soon as i press the accelerator, even before the engine starts to speed up..

This happens when I was already at speed, not from stop.

Can it still be a mount? If it is, it's very odd then.

Re: thump

All I know is that it's a lot easier to put new motor mounts in if you've got the front suspension out.

Re: thump

Ok, everything suggested was wrong.

I replaced the motor mounts, which the old ones I were told were fine.

I was driving, and all of a sudden, THUMP, and SCREEEEECH my rear tires came to a hault and stopped moving..

I would try to accelerate, engine tried, but got no where.. So I waited a couple, and I could drive it again.

Now what? I'm begining to think I should have bought that Lincoln. I start a new job tomorrow and DONT need this.

Re: thump

My father checked it, and thinks my driveshaft is to blame, and NOT the engine mounts at all.

So, I'm screwed. I really needed my car fixed by tomorrow, and now the wrong part and money was used. Damnit.

The similiar clank (but not same sounding) can be made when shifting from D to R.

Re: thump

check driveshaft and universal joint.
the rear axle might have rotated too.

actually, check the flexplate.
you will have to take off the "dust cover" and slowly rotate the engine by hand (disconnect the spark) and tighten the bolts one by one
there are three

i dont think that you are really hearing it from the front of the car.
noises are often hard to trace and vibrations tend to travel well.
when my wipers are on high, i can feel it in the gas pedal.
just an example.
id take it somewhere quick.

Re: thump

my flexplate was loose when i got the car and i got a knocking when i went from d to r.
it got pretty bad and i thought i broke the engine because it clanked so bad in drive when they got loose.
it sounded to me like i had dropped a piston or something.

did you have to "rock" the car at all when it finally started moving again?
did the engine stall?
