1996 Dist Cap and rotor problem

Hi all have a 1996 1500 350 and did a tune upcap rotor wires and plugs. All from MSD and Napa. So after 3 months the Cap and rotor are so wasted carboned likt it got hot or something truck would buck and serge. Changed cap and rotor and fine for 3 months or so again this happened 3 times. Am I missing some thing? I tried different brands on each cap all same result. Rotor also.

How many miles on Vehicle?

When you did tune up was the existing cap the original AC DELCO and what condition was it in when removed? Was it also in the same condition as the aftermarket caps. Could it be that the aftermarket rotor is arcing without affecting engine performance.

Try a AC Delco/Delphi rotor and cap. I think Carquest handles Delphi caps and rotors, I know they handle Delphi fuel pumps.

Wish I could help more.

Make sure your plugs are gapped properly. Test the ohm resestance of the plug wires. They should be less than 10,000 ohms. High resistance in the plugs (gap) or wires will burn up the cap.

Re: 1996 Dist Cap and rotor problem

There is a vent screen (maybe 2) at the base of the dist. Make sure these are clean. I used compresses air to clean mine out; otherwise, the dist does not vent and moisture builds up inside the dist.

Re: 1996 Dist Cap and rotor problem

when you get a new cap and rotor, ask for heavy duty cap and rotor. they have brass contacts inside. the other ones were probably aluminum and melt under the heavy spark. toivo
