Engine Running Very Rough

I came out this morning to go to the doctors office. When I started the car it started right up but it began running rough. The idle will drop and rise sporadically. I think it's running rich as it stinks of what I would say is fuel while it's running. Also, it does not throw a CEL.

All that has changed recently was that I took off the BCS to pull the plug and broke it. I got another one and put it back on. That was yesterday and it ran fine after I put the new BCS in. I also cleaned the MAS this weekend.

So, I can only suspect a few things right now, but I'm not sure. Please tell me you guys know what's up.

Re: Engine Running Very Rough

that seems really similar to what my car did when my ECU took a dump

Re: Engine Running Very Rough

Yes, check the caps in your ecu as well as the honey combs in your maf sensor.

Re: Engine Running Very Rough

I forget where the ECU is and the MAF mesh is dented in one spot but has been since the day I bought it.

Re: Engine Running Very Rough

Pull off the side carpet panels on the center console. You will see the ecu behind the radio. 3 10mm bolts hold it in and 3 plugs go into the ecu. Undo that stuff and pull it out. 4 screws to take off the ecu cover and you are now looking at the circuit board. Check around the 3-4 capacitors that are on the board to see if they are leaking anything.

Re: Engine Running Very Rough

Only problem is that I just went out to pull the ECU and I can't bend over that much to get it out since they cut me open again yesterday at the doctor's office.

Not to mention that I wouldn't want to drive it the way it is running. I barely made it to Orem yesterday on the epoxied boost solenoid.

Now, wouldn't I at least get a CEL if the ECU decided to bust a cap, no pun intended.

Re: Engine Running Very Rough

Bugger.

Well, I suppose it's not far off since the MAF isn't throwing a code either. Now it's just a matter of getting it out.

Re: Engine Running Very Rough

Well, I got another MAS and put it in. The car started right up and idled like normal. However, I was getting a lot of white smoke and it stunk like sulfur. So, I'm wondering if from running rich I had some fuel in one of the cats. After the engine warmed up it stopped? Also, there was a noise, sounded like metal rattling around near the passenger wheel that also went away once the engine warmed up.
Despite that it is idling better than before.
